Vladimir Guerrero Jr. arrived in majors with great expectations. Not only was he one of baseball’s top prospects, he is also the son of a Hall of Famer. The Toronto Blue Jays expected Guerrero to be a key part of their rebuilding, a cornerstone of the franchise that would become a star.

Although Guerrero has been solid in his first two seasons in majors, he was not the immediate impact player one expected him to be. He only made 24 home runs in his first 757 home plate appearances, his power just not showing with Toronto even though he was hitting the ball hard. It was easy to begin to see Guerrero as a fiasco.

Those same people who said Guerrero was a bummer are now celebrating his accomplishments. He had an impressive breakthrough in 2021, posting an AL in the lead of 163 OPS + with 48 homers and 29 doubles. Guerrero made his first All Star Game and won a Silver Slugger while finishing second in the MVP vote.

But Guerrero remembers everything that was said about him before the season. However, just in case he forgot it, he had a personalized jersey made, with his number and the word “BUST” in place of his name.

Chances are, that’s not a line Guerrero will hear about his performance again. He is looking to make further progress next year because he is not satisfied. If Guerrero can replicate, or somehow surpass his 2021 performance, the Blue Jays could well find themselves in the playoffs once again.

He certainly has the motivation to take these steps. The chip on his shoulder is literal, with his jersey personalized to remind people of how people viewed someone who was a 20-year-old rookie. If Guerrero ever manages to join his illustrious father in the Hall of Fame, that jersey could be a factor.

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took the negativity of his performance early in his career and used it to his advantage.
