Vernon Vipers salutes city’s long hockey history in retro jersey – Vernon Morning Star

The BC Hockey League unveiled its retro jerseys to celebrate the league’s 60th anniversary.

The designs range from retro-inspired versions of current uniforms to throwbacks to a previous look.

Teams will wear their retro jerseys at their retro themed parties, but will also wear them at other times of the season as an alternate uniform.

The Vernon Vipers took the opportunity to salute the city’s long sporting history. Vernon jerseys will be white and blue and feature the word Vernon scripted to the front in a triangle shaped pennant.

“We spoke with some of the older players on the senior and junior days, and the consensus wasn’t necessarily to just salute the Vernon Canadians and the Vernon Blades, but the city’s long history, and make sure the colors were blue and white, ”said Vipers assistant general manager Todd Miller.

The Vernon Canadiens, also known as the “Blues,” won the 1956 Allan Cup Canadian senior hockey championship at the old Vernon Civic Arena and lost the 1959 Allan Cup final. BC Junior Hockey League was formed, one of the original franchises was the Vernon Canadians, a name that only lasted a year before becoming the Vernon Blades.

The team is also known in the BCJHL as the Essos, Vikings, Canadiens (again), Lakers and now Vipers.

The Vipers will host the Penticton Vees for their retro-themed game on Saturday, November 27. The Vees pay homage to the former senior Penticton team that played in the 1950s against the Canadiens, winning the Allan Cup and the World Hockey Championship in 1955.

The Vees’ retro-themed home game will be against the Vipers on Friday, December 17th.
