Salem-Keizer Volcanoes will wear special jerseys for the 25th anniversary

The first game at Volcanoes Stadium was on June 23, 1997, and Ryan Jensen was the starting pitcher for the new Salem-Keizer minor league baseball team.

Jensen returns for the club’s 25th anniversary celebration on Thursday night when the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes take on the Portland Mavericks. He will sign autographs before the game and throw the ceremonial first pitch.

Stadium gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the first 500 fans will receive a Volcanoes 25th Anniversary Baseball. Game time is 6:35 p.m.

The Volcanoes will wear a personalized 25th anniversary jersey with the names of 114 players who played for the Volcanoes and went on to play in the major leagues, including Jensen.

The Volcanoes were a minor league affiliate of the San Francisco Giants for the first 23 years. After the 2020 season, the Giants did not offer the club a player development license during a baseball reorganization.

In 2021, the Volcanoes continued their baseball tradition at Keizer Stadium by launching the Mavericks Independent Baseball League, a four-team league of undrafted and released minor leaguers.

The club’s anniversary celebration will include the unveiling of a bronze plaque on the stadium hall in honor of the late Dennis Koho. Support from Keizer’s former mayor was integral to building the stadium, which can be seen on Interstate 5 near exit 260.
