Feeling sleek and luxurious, the Specialized Women’s Prime Short Sleeve Jersey performs well in all temperatures and exudes quality.
As with the rest of Specialized’s Prime clothing line, this women’s short sleeve jersey is designed with ultimate performance in mind. It’s made from a combination of smooth synthetic stretch fabrics with a silky feel but matte finish – a smooth main fabric and a lightweight stretch mesh under the arms and at the bottom hem. The sleeves are slightly hemmed at the ends but not elasticated and without darts. There is a low profile grip tape at the bottom hem and three rear pockets and a zipped pocket. The full length front zipper has a small flap and coverage at the top to reduce potential chafing issues.
The fit of this performance jersey is neat and sleek, as you would expect. Following the size chart on the Spesh website, the XL I tried on was perfect for me as a generous size 14 large. t finds to be the case. It felt sporty without being shrink-wrapped, allowing the moisture-wicking fabric to do its job.
The sleeves are long, which is something to be aware of if you have particularly short arms, but I found them to be a pleasant length. The torso length is about average compared to other jerseys I’ve worn, neither too long nor too short.
On the bike, the jersey is exceptionally comfortable. The soft fabric has an almost peachy-skin quality and is superbly soft next to skin.
It is not as light as some, but nevertheless quickly wicks away moisture and dries quickly, leaving the skin with a very pleasantly stable temperature even in difficult weather conditions (hot, stormy) as well as scorching sun.
Specialized says the fabric has cooling properties, but there’s little information on the details of smart technology. It is, however, cool to the touch and keeps the skin at a pleasant and comfortable temperature, especially with the added help of the mesh panels under the arms.
With the combination of a sleek fit and soft, flexible fabric, this jersey feels like it’s “barely there”, making it a great choice for all-day rides.
The back pockets are decently sized, although the zippered pocket can only fit an iPhone7 in a protective case, so it’s probably best to stick to cards and keys.
The hem gripper held the jersey securely in place without feeling harsh or annoying, and the zipper was very smooth and easy to use, even with one hand, making ventilation nice and simple.
Value and conclusion
There’s no denying that this is towards the higher end of the price spectrum for a short sleeve jersey, although nowhere near as expensive as the £200 Skyline 7mesh jersey or the short sleeve jersey Stamina for women from Santini Redux (now £150).
