SEWELL, NJ (WPVI) — A South Jersey teacher is getting her youngest students excited about math with the Phillies’ World Series race.

Brittany Marrero teaches kindergarten at Hurffville Elementary in Sewell, and says her students were so excited about the World Series that she decided to recreate Tuesday’s incredible win in a unique counting lesson.

“We teach them to write numbers and count a given number, so they had to follow a scorecard,” Marrero said.

“So we’re going to move Kyle Schwarber to first, second, third and all the way home and guess what the score is now,” Marrero told his students.

Using dry-erase markers as bats, students practiced the move throughout their swing.

Some students have been brought up to understand the game.

“My whole family is Phillies fans,” said kindergartener Kinsey Reuss.

But 5-year-old Gavin Murphy can recite all the Phillies lineup.

“Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins, Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto, Alex Bohm, Nick Castellanos, Bryson Stott,” Murphy said.

Murphy is hopeful the team’s heavy hitters will step up Thursday night and bring home another W.

“I think we could win 6-5,” Murphy said.

“Phillies, do it for those kids!” They really admire you – and good luck! says Marrero.

If the Phillies win the World Series, Marrero says they’ll do a little parade inside the classroom to celebrate.
