Jacoby Brissett takes center stage; Joe Thomas gives advice to Jed Wills Jr.: What happened at Browns Training Camp Day 6

BEREA, Ohio — While Deshaun Watson is expected to miss at least the first six games of the season, Jacoby Brissett has taken center stage and will soon begin taking more first-team reps.

But he is no stranger to sudden departures. He was thrown into the starting lineup as a rookie at New England and as a sophomore at Indianapolis. It happened again in 2019 at Indianapolis when Andrew Luck abruptly retired and Brissett (14-23) started the season.

“He has already held various positions during his young career,” coach Kevin Stefanski said. “He’s got a really good way about him, because I’m sure you just notice being around him for a little while. Very, very smart. A very good leader. Has the ability to play games on the training ground, help out in the meeting room, and be responsible throughout the weight room, if desired. He just does all the right things.

Stefanski acknowledged he would draft it differently for Watson and Brissett this season.

“There are certain games you would play with Deshaun that you wouldn’t play with Jacoby,” Stefanski said. “There are certain plays that Jacoby sees very well that maybe has a lot of rep that Deshaun doesn’t on. That’s part of our job as coaches, is to understand that there’s no shortage of plays you can run, but to make sure the players are comfortable running those games.

Stefanski ticked off Brissett’s strengths: “Height, arm strength and decision-making would be a few of them.”

Amari Cooper misses training due to ankle injury

Cooper sat out practice with a right ankle injury sustained while practicing in the red zone on Monday. Stefanski said he would be back “soon” and that he was fine.

That’s good news for the Browns, as Cooper underwent surgery last offseason to repair his ankle. The Browns are also still without David Bell (PUP roster, foot) and Anthony Schwartz (knee). Undrafted rookie Isaiah Weston also suffered what is believed to be a torn ACL and possibly a torn meniscus.

He cleared injury waivers on Tuesday and returned to injured reserve.

The pads light up; minor punches ensue

The Browns practiced in the pads for the first time on Tuesday, and Stefanski reminded them not to engage in friendly fire. Still, rookie cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. and Donovan People-Jones got a little dust after battling for the ball on the sidelines. It was over in a flash, and no one was worse for wear.

“It’s really important that it’s the Browns against the Browns so we have to do our job and it’s a physical game – you can’t shy away from that – but now is not the time to take a ‘good hit. market ‘on your own teammate,’ Stefanski said before training. good posture you should be using your hands, keeping your head out and all that kind of stuff thats what i will be looking for during this practice and watching the tape to make sure the guys are sticking to their technique and their fundamentals.

Joe Thomas assists Jed Wills Jr. and offensive linemen

Joe Thomas, future Hall of Fame left tackle and Browns preseason TV analyst, has been helping offensive linemen practice in recent days and has spent a few extra minutes after practice giving advice to the sophomore left tackle Jed Wills Jr.

The Browns expect Wills to bounce back from last season, when he was held back by a lingering ankle injury.

Other injuries

The following players did not participate in Tuesday’s session: WR David Bell (foot), P Corey Bojorquez (right foot), WR Amari Cooper (ankle), DT Sheldon Day (back), CB Reggie Robinson II (core ). WR Anthony Schwartz (knee), LB Anthony Walker Jr. (groin), CB Denzel Ward (foot) and WR Javon Wims (illness). Jadeveon Clowney (uninjured) and Jack Conklin (recovering from knee surgery) were also inactive.
