2022 Player Bulletin: Cody Eakin

Today in our 2022 bison sabers the series of player report cards is forward Cody Eakin.

Total Season Stats: 69 GP | 4G | 8A | 12 PTS

Age: 31

Contract status: Under contract until 2021-22 (cap reached at $2.25 million)

At this point, with Cody Eakin, you know what you’re getting. A brave veteran forward who will show leadership, win faceoffs, be decent on the penalty kill and score a point or two here and there. If that was what the Sabers expected when they added the fourth line up front, then they got what they asked for.

Last season, he saw a slight increase in playing time as he entered anywhere in the last six and gained additional exposure on the penalty kill, averaging 13:35 a night. His 56.1% HAT was up slightly from last season’s 54.3%, but both brands led the Sabres. His hits/60 and blocks/60 weren’t unreasonable numbers, in the top ten for Buffalo among forwards.

Eakin’s contract is up and don’t expect him to return. Don Granato, although he used him a lot last season, is not necessarily a fan of him. With a number of young forwards sitting in Rochester waiting to step up a gear, it seems natural for the Sabers to replace him with JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn this fall.

That said, he is highly regarded in the locker room by his teammates, and Kevyn Adams could try to give him a one-year contract to continue bringing that veteran leadership to a very young team.

Plus, you gotta give him credit for coming up with the idea for the Sabers to dress up in Flint Tropics uniforms — jerseys, shorts, headbands, the works — resembling Will Ferrell clones from the basketball movie Semi- Pro. Other than that, there’s not much else to say.
